On May 23, 2016, in the Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography (MIIGAiK) at MIIGAiK Extraterrestrial Laboratory (MExLab) the Second Scientific meeting in memory of Kira Borisovna Shingareva took place. At the meeting a new Phobos Atlas was presented. The Phobos Atlas was created by Laboratory’s team and dedicated to the memory of K.B. Shingareva and L.M. Bugaevskiy, who made significant contributions to planetary mapping.
K.B. Shingareva and L.M. Bugaevskiy – Russian cartographers, whose participation helped to develop the first Russian maps and globe of Phobos
During the discussion, at the suggestion of V.P. Savinykh (Russian Cosmonaut and MIIGAiK President), it was decided to resume the work of Toponymic commission, organized by K.B. Shingareva at our Institute under support of the Russian Academy of Science. One of Kira latest ideas was to give Russian names to small craters in the area of the Lunokhod-1 (“Luna-17” mission). This initiative was successful and in 2012 International Astronomical Union approved the new names of 12 small craters in the area of “Luna-17” landing site. The work has been done with help of A.T. Bazilevsky and the support of G.A. Burba, who were taken part in preparing of first geomorphologic maps after Lunokhod’s missions. Our new initiative is to name small craters in the area of Lunokhod-2 (“Luna-21” mission), and the idea was supported by Toponymic commission, which now includes scientists from MIIGAiK, SAI MSU, Vernadsky Institute and Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU).
